ISRO's Adity-L1 mission to be launch on 2 september 2023 and its journey 1.5 million km over four months

Aditya L1 mission India's first -ever solar mission, will be launched by the ISRO on Friday from Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.

what is Aditya L1 mission ?

Aditrya L1, the Indian Space Reasearch Organisation  (ISRO),s first ever mission to the sun is set to be launched from Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota on Friday. ISRO will launch the spacecraft at 11:50: am, after the succesfull mission Chandryaan-3 on the Moon's south pole last Wednesday.

Through Adity L1, ISRO aims to place the craft in a "halo orbit around the Lagrang point 1 (L1)  of the Sun-Earth system, which is about 1.5 million km from the Earth."Through this mission ISRO will study the impact of solar activity on space weather in real-time. The other key objectives of the unmanned mission also include understanding " Coronal heating, coronal mass ejection, pre-flare and flare activites and there charecteristics, dynamics of the space weather ,propogation of particlesand fields, etc.,

Adity L1's four month long journey

The ISRO explained on its website that the spacecraft initially placed on the lower earth orbit.

"Subsiquently, the orbit will be made more eliptical and then spacecraft will be launched towords the Lagrang pont L1, Adity L1 willl exit to the influence of the earth gravitational orbit and its influental area of the earth. Once out of it, its"cruise phase" will begin and the craft will be ejected for"cruise phase" and the craft will be injected into a large halo orbit around L1." The total travel time from launch to L1 would about four months for Aditya L1.

What are Lagrag points?

Lagrange points are positions in space where objects sent there tend to stay put. At Lagrange points, the gravitational pull of two large masses precisely equals the centripetal force required for a small object to move with them. These points in space can be used by spacecraft to reduce fuel consumption needed to remain in position.

Legrang pont where the over gravitational field is in equilibrium

Of the five Lagrange points, three are unstable and two are stable. The unstable Lagrange points - labeled L1, L2 and L3 - lie along the line connecting the two large masses. The stable Lagrange points - labeled L4 and L5 - form the apex of two equilateral triangles that have the large masses at their vertices. L4 leads the orbit of earth and L5 follows.

The L2 point of the Earth-Sun system was the home to the WMAP spacecraft, current home of Planck, and future home of the James Webb Space Telescope.
